      Biography

Stacy Kooistra enjoys a fast-paced practice that includes all types of litigation. His practice encompasses but is not limited to commercial and business formation and disputes, complex divorce and family litigation, real estate issues and criminal defense. Stacy has a remarkably diverse background both within and outside the practice of law.

Stacy has been practicing law since 2005, first for a law firm in Spearfish, South Dakota and, since 2007, with Myers Billion, LLP. Stacy has enjoyed a vigorous practice at Myers Billion in all phases of litigation, where he actively applies a mentality of aggressive excellence on behalf of every one of his clients. Stacy has had a Martindale-Hubble “AV” Peer Review Rating, which is the highest rating possible, since 2013.

Outside the law, Stacy has been active in the United States military, as well as in athletics and the business community.

Since high school, Stacy has been applying the values of hard work and commitment that he learned while growing up in the country outside the small town of Rock Valley, Iowa. Athletically, Stacy played basketball and left his high school as its all-time leader in points, rebounds and blocked shots. In college, Stacy led the University of Sioux Falls to its highest national ranking in school history. He then went on to play professionally in Sweden, where he led the league in scoring.

After returning to the United States, Stacy made the remarkable decision to enlist in the United States Army. Stacy completed Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and then served a tour in Baumholder, Germany. While in Germany, he was selected to attend the Army’s rigorous Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Georgia. In December of 1998, Stacy was commissioned a Military Intelligence Officer. He was then assigned to the First Infantry Division (Big Red One) at Fort Riley, Kansas where he served as a Intelligence Officer at both the battalion and brigade levels.

Upon satisfying his active duty commitment, Stacy returned home to South Dakota where he worked within the Sioux Falls business community until entering law school. During law school, Stacy served in the South Dakota Army National Guard as the Intelligence Officer for the 1st Battalion, 147th Field Artillery Brigade. Included in this service was a 2003 mobilization for Operation Iraqi Freedom during Stacy’s first year of law school that took him to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Upon his unit’s demobilization, Stacy completed his first year studies on his own with just enough time to join his classmates for the start of their second year. In 2004, Stacy was promoted to the rank of Captain. In 2007, Stacy was sworn in to the South Dakota Air National Guard, where he currently serves at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Believing that a balance in life is important, Stacy enjoys spending considerable time with his family. He and his wife, Anna, have three children, two teenagers and a one year old, with another one on the way. They enjoy a variety of family activities including sports, outdoor recreation, school-related activities and traveling to Anna’s native Sweden.
